OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to establish its first office in India, located in New Delhi, later in 2025. This marks a significant expansion for the AI firm in its second-largest market by user base, reflecting a deeper commitment to serve and grow its presence in the country.

The company has officially registered as a legal entity in India and begun recruiting a local team to focus on strengthening ties with partners, government bodies, businesses, developers, and academic institutions. India is a critical market for OpenAI, with the number of ChatGPT users in the country having increased more than fourfold over the past year. Notably, India features the largest population of student users on the platform worldwide.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India possesses all the key ingredients to become a global AI leader, including exceptional tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and robust government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in our goal to make advanced AI more accessible across India and to build AI for India, and with India.”

The move also aligns with the Indian government’s push through the IndiaAI mission to build an inclusive AI ecosystem. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI’s decision, highlighting India’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption.

OpenAI plans to host its first Education Summit and Developer Day in India this year to further engage with the country’s tech community. The company faces competition in India from major players like Google and local AI startups but is poised to deepen its roots with this new office.

While specific details about the office location within New Delhi and its full range of activities are yet to be announced, the opening underscores OpenAI’s long-term commitment to the fast-growing Indian AI market
